Did you know that it’s possible to have a sexually transmitted disease (STD) without showing any symptoms? If you’re sexually active with one or more partner, there’s an increased likelihood that you could be infected with a dangerous STD without even knowing it! Some of the most common STD’s can fester for months without any warning signs, which can be not only dangerous for you, but also for your sexual partners. At The Men’s Vitality Center in Tempe, we’ve helped hundreds of men diagnose and treat a variety sexually transmitted diseases so they can rest easy knowing their sexual health is in check. Below are a few of the most common STD’s among men, along with their warning signs.

Early infection of HIV, or the human immunodeficiency virus, can lead to the well-known disease of AIDS. Also known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, AIDS is a very serious virus that will stick with you for life. HIV attacks your body’s immune system, which is typically used to fight off infection in the body. If left untreated, HIV can increasingly reduce the number of CD4 cells (T cells) in the body, making you more prone to infections and cancer. When your body’s immune system is weak, opportunistic infections and cancers are more likely to take over your body.

While there are a variety of symptoms associated with the AIDS virus, many of those infected have reported flu-like feelings and unusual fatigue during the early stages of the virus. In the late stages of HIV and AIDS, many people have experienced unwarranted rashes, fungal infections in the throat and weight loss.

Gonorrhea

Also known as the “clap” or “drip,” gonorrhea is a contagious disease that is transmitted most often through sexual contact. Caused by the bacterium neisseria gonorrhoeae , gonorrhea can grow and multiply very easily in the mucus membranes of your body. Often grown in warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, common symptoms of gonorrhea in men include:

  • A burning sensation during urination
  • A burning sensation in the throat (from oral sex)
  • Painful or abnormally swollen testicles
  • Greenish yellow or white discharge from the penis

Untreated gonorrhea can lead to epididymitis, a painful condition of the testicles that can lead to infertility and infection. To cure gonorrhea, your healthcare physician will prescribe you either an oral or injectable antibiotic. It’s critical to take all of the antibiotics prescribed to you, even if you start to feel better right away. You should also tell anyone you have recently had sex with that you are infected, so they can seek treatment right away.

Chlamydia

Also known as “the silent infection,” chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a tiny bacterium known as chlamydia trachomatis. If let untreated in men, chlamydia can lead to male infertility and can cause scarring to your reproductive tract. Chlamydia can also result in nongonococcal urethritis (NGU), a painful infection of the urethra. Common symptoms of chlamydia in men can include:

  • Abnormal thick and milky penile discharge
  • Pain during urination
  • Rectal pain, discharge or bleeding
  • Itching and burning around the opening of the penis
  • Testicular pain
  • Sore throat
