These are some of the most important goals a person can set for themselves, so why is that people have such a hard time sticking to their New Year’s resolutions?

The Good News

Most resolutions fail because people set their expectations too high and set goals that they just can’t achieve. However, you can meet your New Year’s resolution if you start with small goals and work your way up to bigger goals. Weight loss isn’t an instantaneous process, and you can’t expect yourself to have six-pack abs by February if you have a substantial amount of weight to lose. If you’re trying to make healthier dietary choices, switching your entire diet at once is likely to quickly burn out your willpower.

Instead of setting enormous goals for yourself, start with small, tangible goals. Try adding vegetables into your diet three days per week instead of stocking your fridge with foods you don’t find particularly appealing. For men seeking to lose weight, it might be helpful to set an initial goal of five to 10 pounds. If your goal is to exercise more, try going to the gym just once or twice a week more than you usually do. From a psychological perspective, starting small helps you to develop good habits and to visualize your goal as something attainable. Rather than viewing your diet as a punishment for prior choices, you’ll begin to view your new diet as an empowering addition to your health regimen.
