If you’re going through testosterone replacement therapy, you might be worried that you have to make changes to your lifestyle. Maybe you need to modify your exercise plan. Perhaps you need to make changes to what you eat. But what if you enjoy a good beer, a nice glass of wine, or a marvelous scotch? It’s a good news/bad news scenario.
Here’s the bad news. Alcohol is the mortal enemy of testosterone, and it does decrease testosterone levels. The good news? You have to drink a lot before that begins to happen. The way it works is it depends on what you drink. Beer contains two chemicals, phytoestrogen, and prolactin, which are commonly found in hops and barley. They increase estrogen levels, and, therefore, decrease testosterone. Wine also contains phytoestrogen. Plus, when you drink more, you gain weight, and fat contains estrogen. It’s a fact that alcoholic men commonly suffer from abnormally low testosterone and infertility.
Worried yet? Don’t be, because studies show that moderate to light drinking (defined as 2-3 beers daily) only results in a slight decrease in testosterone levels. Actually, that level of drinking can increase the levels of the hormone DHEA-5, which may have a protective influence on your heart.
So how much should you drink? You’ll have nothing to worry about if you drink 2-3 glasses of beer or wine weekly. You should even be okay with 2-3 glasses daily. It’s binge drinking, defined as 5 or more drinks consumed within a short period that’s the problem. If you control your intake, you have nothing to worry about.
